Your Anima Lumina Evening

During the evenings since July 2016, Zoo Sauvage de St-Félicien in Lac-Saint-Jean transforms into a spectacular outdoor scene infused with sound and light along the Anima Lumina trail.  One evening, a young boy who could communicate with animals, followed the moon into the night and along his trail (and yours), he spoke with many different species that crossed his path. You’re at forefront of exclusive encounters in which nature comes to life in a unique and incredible fashion. Surrounded by the shadows and howls of the creatures of the night with multimedia presentations animating the many colours of the boreal forest. Moonlight illuminates the path within a mysterious and magical atmosphere.  Anima Lumina is for everyone of all ages, a perfect activity for families, nature enthusiasts and those with poetry in their hearts.

A large-scale productionAnima Lumina

This unique project is the fruit of the clever work by Moment Factory, a Québec-based company with an impressive international reputation. They’ve produced a remarkable number of large-scale multimedia creations. However, because the creatures are in their natural nocturnal habitats during the Anima shows, this presentation does not feature the different varieties of animals at the zoo for regulatory reasons. Just like us, they must also sleep and rest to be ready for the next day.

It takes a team of 40 qualified individuals to carry out such a production. With help, they carried out the installation of large-scale multimedia equipment in the zoo: 70 speakers, 200 floodlights, eight projection screens and nearly 20,000 feet of wiring. The development of this illuminated trail represents a colossal workload.

Without a doubt, Anima Lumina is an extraordinary experience that will be sure to please all senses. And that’s not all! Another city in Québec is also cloaked in the magic created by Factory Moment. It’s now possible to experience a third and all new nocturnal path named Nova Lumina in Chandler, Gaspésie. In addition to Foresta Lumina with continued success of their illuminated Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook in the Eastern Townships since 2014.

Preparing for your Anima evening

Here are a few tips to make the best of your experience in the great outdoors:

  • The trails is 1.5 km in length, with several flights of stairs and many benches for perfect views of the show. The trail offers easy walking conditions but we do suggest bringing along proper footwear for walking and hiking;
  • The visit lasts for about an hour depending on how fast you walk and your personal interests for fully enjoying the immersive experience. However, you can stay in Anima for as long as you like. A tripod may be useful if you expect to take pictures since the exhibitions are lengthy;
  • It’s essential to bring a change of warm clothes because the evenings can be chilly, a raincoat for the unexpected and insect repellant to keep away the bugs. You can bring a lunch and water with you, but refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase at the end of the presentation;
  • Individuals with reduced mobility can still enjoy the course, but may not be able to gain access certain areas. For this reason, the Zoo Sauvage has Anima Lumina - Roxanne St-Pierrebeen working with Kéroul for a long time whose mandate is to provide accessible tourist facilities;
  • For families with young children, considering that Anima takes place during the night, it may be beneficial for the children to sleep during the day if possible. Staff members are clearly identified and present along the entire length of the trail for guiding you along the woodland path and ensuring everyone stays safe. However, it’s not recommended to travel the trail with a stroller: infant carriers and backpacks are preferable.

Last but not least, keep in mind that this visitor experience is unique and unparalleled. Open your eyes wide and let yourself be lulled by this luminous history in the heart of the boreal forest.

Enjoy your visit!

Hoisting the Sails

Voile Mercator

At the turn of the nineties, I remember an adventurous family that had sailed around the world via the Atlantic Ocean during nine months. When the story was reported on TVA, I watched in wonder as the images were presented before my eyes and to my surprise, I learned that a family could explore the ocean for extended periods of time. A tour that was both challenging, yet enriching at the same time. Following this report, other enthusiasts and adventurers were inspired by this same love for the sea. To set off and discover new horizons with the wind in your sails is the beauty of sailing.

No need to be an expert to experience this expedition: this dream activity is accessible to everyone! Visitors can hoist the sails and enjoy this recreational activity on the Saguenay Fjord. A unique adventure offered by the local business Voile Mercator.

Learning to sail requires preparation, meaning training made available to everyone, of all skill levels over a period of several days. Mastering the ropes, hoisting the sails and taking the helm may at first seem unfamiliar, but with Voile Mercator, this new universe will quickly become your playing field. The courses allows you to become a crew member or even a skipper accompanied by the captain. The company offers several tours and training courses on the Saguenay Fjord to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River and Lac Champlain. A variety of expeditions from two to twelve days for all skill levels are available. A nautical adventure that’s perfect for the entire family.

The two owners of Voile Mercator, Jacques Hébert and Jean-Michel Hébert, are true sailing aficionados and passionate about the sport.  They’ve been sharing their knowledge for almost 30 years.  Originally from the area, Jacques is a dedicated instructor to his clients and a connoisseur of the Saguenay Fjord. His team is composed of about 10 sailing instructors all having completed their first aid and CPR training.

“Holding a tiller in your hand is an incredible experience! A new horizon to the universe is yours to discover…” Jacques Hébert

Sailing is the perfect occasion to observe phenomenal sunrises and sunsets from the waters of the fjord. For those looking for extra adventure, Voile Mercator also offers nighttime sailing excursions. An incredible opportunity to sail on the only navigable fjord in North America while admiring the starry sky above. A spectacular natural presentation that will leave you in awe.
